For the island of oahu, some points of interests are Pearl Harbor, Waikiki beach (which is a man-made beach if you didnt know), Diamond Head (which was a volcano), the Polynesian Cultural Center (like a park full of the the different Polynesian cultures in the world), and the city of Honolulu which has many interesting museums, cultural stores, etc. There are still many more places! Keep doing more research!

My husband and I want to travel to Oahu, Hawaii (on a budget), some time in the next few months for about 7-10 days or so (some time between Oct and Jan but we are flexible). Does anyone know when is the best time to travel there? Where would be the best place to find cheap flights?
The Expert answers:

Hawaii tends to be more expensive and not offer as many all inclusives since it’s a US state and there are no all inclusives in the states. I would recommend Jamaica, Swept Away Resort in particular. You should go to a travel agent because they will give you the different options and make sure it’s perfect for you. You shouldn’t risk doing it yourself for such a special occasion. Plus you don’t pay them, the hotels and airlines do.

Ladies, what do you think….what would YOU do?

Hello all,

Firstly this may be a strange question to ask in this forum, but I want to ask people who are in the same shoes as I am, and I am a mother of one soon to be a mother of two (2nd girl due next week by c-section). So that’s why I’m asking here.
So, although originally my whole family was due to fly out for the birth and visit with me (I live in Greece, my parents are in the UK working, and my brother, sister and partners are in Australia where I am from) my brother and his partner calls me 6 weeks ago (when I was 7.5m pregnant, and tells me they aren’t coming because they really just cant afford it, they are getting married instead, they are cashing in the ticket for a honeymoon holiday credit and are getting married before the years end.
Now them not coming doesnt upset me apart from not having the opportunity to visit, they’ve already come out to visit twice for my first girl and my own wedding, so I absolutely understand. But the fact that they decide to get married whilst I am ready to drop, and schedule it barely after I would go in for my 6 week checkup… has just thrown me!
Now I am not asking whether its fair or not, I am one person out of many they have to consider and their own happiness is of course paramount. But I have decided not to go and I wonder if any of you would decide the same as me…?
My reasons for not going are as follows;

Travelling to Australia barely 2 months after a c-section, with a 2 month old baby and an unbelievably rambunctious, prone to tantrums, heavy with the ‘terrible twos’ 2 and a half year old.

Travelling without my husband (is on a strict job contract, holidays taken for the birth of the baby) even though my parents did offer to fly out from the UK to travel with my from Athens.

My parents only have 2weeks left of annual leave, having taken the other weeks earlier in the year, not knowing about the sudden wedding….so I would be going through such a journey for only 2 weeks.

Obviously my second born does not have a passport, and I would have to literally race around like crazy getting one as soon as I left the hospital to get it in time (there are no online applications in Greece and turn around times for public offices are insane, also I live on a Greek island and would have to travel back and forth to the next bigger and more populated island to put through papers in person)

My recovery for my first c-section was horrible, perhaps because it was an emergency c-section. I had nightmares, I was depressed, I felt like a failure. I didn’t want to deal with all the people around me coming to congratulate me, I wanted them all to go away and just to be with my parents and my husband. I rolled out of bed for weeks, and my scar hurt for weeks when I accidently exerted the muscles in that area and smarted for months…say if my husband picked me up to hug me or if I lifted something too heavy. It was an physical and emotional rollercoaster. I know some women recover quickly and without too much of an issue….but it wasnt like that for me!

Lastly, it would all have to go on my credit card, all our money is gone on the new baby and the building of our new house. Now if it was just the money….it would not stop me from going, but it just adds another weight on my back since I have been a stay at home mother since I had my first.

Its breaking my heart not to go, but I thought atleast I could spend the next year to plan for a trip out next Winter when I will physically fit and the newborn will be a toddler and I could stay for a month or two and have saved all year for it. And there is a good chance my husband could come with me obviously have a years notice for his work commitments. Also seeing as my soon-to be sister in law has been desperate for kids forever, we might learn in the year that she is pregnant and plan our trip around the arrival!

What do you think ladies? Do you think my decision not to go is fair enough? I’ve been so torn up about it ever since they told me, had they decided to have it a few months later or atleast if I could have had a VBAC, I would probably have gone, but with all these obstacles, I thought that I just cant. I also just dont want to subject my new baby to it all, being so young and susceptible etc. And the wedding is a 3hr car drive from where we live in Sydney to boot.

sigh…..so what are your thoughts??
oh by the way..the travelling would be -
2hr ferry to the nearest island with airport alone
1hr flight to Athens, alone
5hr flight to Dubai, with parents
7hr flight to Singapore
7hr flight to Sydney

The Expert answers:

This is not a strange question for this forum at all. Of course you should NOT go. You are being very understanding and wise about their reason for not coming for to birth of your daughter and they should be just as understanding as to why you cant be there for their wedding. Under the circumstances it would be horrid for you to travel all that way. I agree with you totally.

my mother is a liar, a control freak, always 10 steps ahead. you communicate to her that somethng is vital and she is in outterspace doing the complete opposite intentionally. im old enough to know that she is the devil and this is how she has opertated since birth. if any of you think this is 14 school girl **** you need to take your *** to that forum yourself. my mother is in politics. my sister has lived in the mountains since graduating highschool. she uses that lax atmosphere of the mountains, country, college to disguise herself… same with the lesbian thing. lesbians think she is a stalker and she acted out sexually to imo intentionally get pregant by a black person and got an abortion. she is a psychopath and as if it isnt enough to deal with her growing up she has ruined my adulthood – the rest of my life almost from the start… it didnt take long… as soon as nice intelligent boy turns man doing great things at university and close to marriage… she..

killed me with the gun that doesnt make any noise. i went from being able to dunk a basketball and run 10 miles faster than most college atheletes to gaining 100 lbs and still going. she doesnt have problems with the law. though she does house a large amount of marijuana growing supplies in her attic – atleast she did for 10 years or so. obviously she will continue to do ****** up ****. everytime i am around her she tries to attack me somehow. ive heard/read that **** is deeply rooted in the mother. they are both dyslexic. my parents havent had sex in who knows how long – all of them are alcoholics.

im the one with the great life… i was going to a university, i am a very good musician, traveled, outstanding athlete in several sports, i was dating a girl i was in love with… she is great. but im dying here, literally. what is the worst that could happen – silently? where i end up in jail for stupid **** or kill myself? i end up the person everyone used to admire and fond of to the person everyone hates and pisses on my grave.

they are all that ****** up. my father is alcoholic, ocd, gay, GOP, with a schizophrenic brother

there are probably countless other psychiatric terms/things here but they are all narcissistic and dont do anything about it or speak about it. dysfunction and denial… again, mother is in politics, comes from a wealthy family et all

i wanted to add… that i am notorious, pretty much famous in home towns… and i travel/have traveled alot. i am someone who does far and beyond good with the women…. however, like i said… perhaps close to marriage. this **** is bad. for someone who is a sucess… to wind up dying before i turn 30. infallable to almost anything… what is the worst case scenario?

Who here wants the AFL to get rid of the Pre-season comp (Bullsh!t Cup) and have a longer & fairer season?

There are some user’s that know my opinion on this….I have stated and commented about this topic for 2yrs on this forum.
I just want to know what do you think….leave it or dump it?
Please don’t say that we need to have The Bullsh!t Cup, because its the only way to see how the young and untried players perform.
The current fixtures are always unfair, some clubs don’t play each other twice, 1 club always gets a very good deal….only leaves Vic 4 times a year, whereas another Vic teams has to travel interstate at least 6 to 8 times a season.
Enough of my ramble…….I am not a fan of Pre-season comp.
Edit….I just LOVE to see Collingwood travell 6 to 8 times interstate during the 22 round season. Go to Perth and Brisbane in the same season must be a BIG NO, NO.
campdog1

I understand what you wrote…..but I am sick of all these rule changes or even trial changes. Why is there a need to change the rules?
It seems that the AFL has to change a rule or 2, for the sake of it.
vaughy

Excellent point…….What is the point of the split round anyway?

Being around my family is so emotionally draining..?

I’m 16. I am a very right-brained kind of person. I’m creative, especially when it comes to things like music and art, but not logical at all. I’m an extreme introvert; I crave being alone with peace and quiet. I tend to be very compassionate about things.. people, animals, even plants sometimes, and I always want to help those who are in trouble or hurting. I absolutely can’t stand it when people fight, especially over trivial things; it makes me want to run away and hide. I also tend to zone out a lot and fantasize about the future and create these perfect little scenarios in my head of how things should be. And I crave adventure. I want to travel the world and experience so many different things. If you’re familiar with the Myers Briggs personality test, I’m a classic INFP: introvert, intuitive, feeler, perceiver.

Everyone else in my family is pretty much the exact opposite, especially my parents (I have one brother). They’re all very left-brained and structured, and they don’t seem to care about having fun. They’re perfectly content to have a set schedule and never change things up. They’re also very cynical about things, where I’m an optimist. They don’t mind loud noises, and blast the volume on the tv a lot, and I can’t stand it because I just want peace and quiet. They tend to bicker a lot over little things, which I also can’t stand. Plus, they can never see things my way at all.

I’m basically around my family 24/7. It’s rare that all of them are gone at once. I’m starting to find that being around them so much is really taking a toll on me. I love them, but since I’m the only one with my personality type, and I have almost nothing in common with them, it really frustrates me and makes me sad. I’m sure it’s not so fun for them being around me, either, but they never act like it bothers them. I just feel like it’s three against one, and my feelings don’t really matter as much, so I stifle them just to keep the peace. I stay by myself up in my room a lot, listening to music or whatever.

I have one best friend, but she lives far away and I don’t see her a lot. I haven’t found many people in real life who I can really connect with, who are “one of my kind” I guess you’d say. I found an online forum for people with my personality type, and it’s almost scary how much I can relate to them. But that doesn’t help me in real life. :/

What do you think I should do? I’ll probably be moving out of the house in a couple of years when I graduate, but until then, it’s really, really getting me down. And now I’m afraid I sound selfish because I’m only focusing me dealing with their problems instead of them dealing with my own problems that probably irritate them, too.
And I’m sorry it’s so long.. I didn’t realize it until just now.

The Expert answers:

Wow quite detailed! But not enough I am afraid.

What program/company are you going with? And am I mistaken: It says 25 days at the top, but only says 9 days of itinerary? If it is only 9 days than I must say that $5000 is not a very good deal.

First I must say that it is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity! Are you going with a school trip or on your own? If it is with your school, then take the time to spend with your classmates as it will be unforgettable, regardless of cost.

A few things to consider upon reading the itinerary:

It says only 5 nights are paid for the hotel…how about the other 2? Must you pay them yourself?
A 1 or 2 star hotel in Europe is not like a one or two star hotel here in the States. They aren’t fabulous, large, or amenity filled, but they are clean, friendly staffed, and a place to rest overnight. Hotels are extremely expensive in Europe and 3 or 4 stars is a waste of money.

Breakfast = roll and coffee. This is much more than it sounds. A european breakfast is typically not at all like an american breakfast with greasy things. That’s why they call it a european breakfast. Most hotels in Europe offer breakfast included with the rate and are very bountiful. They include (all you can eat) rolls, juices, coffees, teas, cold cuts, fruit, and much more. They don’t weigh you down like greasy American food, and you don’t want to be weighed down while trekking all over the countryside. If you’re looking for bacon and eggs you won’t find it. As for dinner…it can vary greatly, but usually sticks to the regional flavor.

Motorcoaches in Europe are not like in the US either. They are big and spacious and oftentimes the only way to get around in crowded places to see the sights.

Sightseeing tours suck. They are nice for certain places, but most times you just want to get out and explore by yourself. With tourism nowadays, most museums and places have info in English. If you want more, go to a museum and pay for a tour guide to take you around if that’s your thing. There are often schedules where they will speak English to a group of people for very cheap prices.

Flight – depending on the time of year, flights to Italy can easily cost upwards of 2000, especially in the summer.

Making pizza – This is really a unique experience! It may sound too simple to be enjoyable as you can easily make pizza at home, but how many people in the world can say that they made AUTHENTIC pizza, with a real pizza chef, in ITALY. Now THAT is impressive.

I wish there was.. I do the same thing as you when it comes to travel.
Years ago I thought that I should start a website that bases your vacation on “type/budget” not a specific place or area. Like you pick beach, or skiing.. And $400 or whatever. The website spits back a bunch of results to places all over the country/world for beach or whatever that fit your budget..

I wish I was a better web developer than I am. I would have been all over that years ago.

The Expert answers:

Since most flights are pretty full already, the airlines will not sell seats on the cheap just to make sure the plane is flying at 100% full. They know what the breakeven number of passengers are needed. If you want to get a good deal, travel during low-peak travel season and buy your tickets early.

The Expert answers:

If you buy something last minute, it will be pretty expensive. I suggest you plan your vacation/holiday and travel during off-peak times. You can save quite a bit of money. Otherwise check out http://www.priceline.com where it has a Name Your Price feature. Just know that flight times can be pretty inconvenient and you may have long connection times but sometimes you can score a good deal. Also know that after you agree to everything and pay, all tickets are non-refundable and you lose everything if you don’t fly; meaning no travel voucher or credit is given. Therefore read all terms and conditions carefully.

3 – That is NOT the website or phone number of the real Dereham Hospital. That is a fake website. The real hospital is on the NHS website http://www.nhs.uk/Services/hospitals/Overview/DefaultView.aspx?id=29888
4 – there is NO Barrister by that name registered with the UK Bar Council – he does not exist
5- there is NO such thing as a London Employment and Social Security Certificate. That term does not even exist in the UK. “Social Security” is a US term, not UK

This is a Nigerian scammer out to steal your money and identity. Report this ad to the site where it was posted and if you did send personal or passport information contact your local police

If you really think you can get a job overseas without a single face to face interview with your employer or their licensed recruitment agency you need to get off the computer now as you are at high risk of being scammed. NOBODY hires workers for overseas jobs without ever meeting them IN PERSON. There are NO exceptions

this web site NOAA in Honolulu http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/cphc/ has been posting advisories since 18 July. it is packing 125mph winds, traveling towards Hawaii now at 12mph, expected to hit the Big Island on Friday…and has such a large diameter it could hit Maui at the same time it totally covers the Big Island. Pretty irresponsible NON govt reporting if you ask me, in the wake of Katrina mess which has STILL not been cleaned up….people in Hawaii need to prepare for this regardless of whether if we are lucky it will veer off and go out to sea further, and stop increasing it’s mass and winds. It’s too far south to hit the islands and given it’s speed, rate and pressure, we’ll get some small waves out of it and maybe some wind. Good time to go surfing or wind-surfing.
The Expert answers:

It is a known fact that US travel advisories are usually written by those who have never visited the country themselves. They seem to mix Afghanistan with Pakistan. They repeat the same thing again and again only because of lack of interest by our governments. Otherwise for other countries same advisories are issued and waived off immediately. Just because of PR. Our rival India is rather big country and US can not afford to break ties with them. In order to please them such advisories are issued.
All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during this condition unless it is absolutely necessary or a personal emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report for work. Anyone traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest —http://www.butlersheriff.org/geninfo/gen_info_snow_defs.htm
That is the definition of a level 3 snow advisory, but what about a blizzard, isn’t that worse? Is a blizzard considered a level 3?
Or does anyone know if the roads in batesville, Indiana are or will be closed or impassable before midnight tonight?

Generally if a cop see you driving in it he can give you a ticket, most are to busy to mess with it. However if you get stuck and have to call for help you will get a ticket plus yelled at and a high tow bill

Winter Storm Questions?

Okay, so I live in Western Pennsylvania, and we are getting this winter storm. My county is in a Winter Storm Warning, but counties south and east are in Winter Weather Advisories and even the county farthest south is under no advisory. I was wondering, why when a winter storm travels more south from us, we have colder air, which makes it an all snow event? But, today it tracked farther north towards us and that caused warmer air to move in in the southern counties and cause a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and just plain rain. While where I live it’s all snow. Why does this happen when it goes south or comes closer to us?

The Expert answers:

The north of the US (just as the north of Europe, where I live) is under the influence of the polar front; a separation between the polar dry and cold air, and the temperature mild and often moist air.

Along that front, warmer air climbs over colder one and that creates low pressures. When one of them is deepening, due to the prevailing westerlies and the Coriolis force, it tends to move eastward.

To start with, you are either on the cold or warm side of the front. When the low pressure moves toward you, you will first meet the warm front. That is where the mild air climbs over the cold one, cooling down with altitude and bringing clouds and precipitations.

Then the cold front, moving faster that the warm one, will come over you. The wind will shift veer to the north, the air becomes unstable, precipitation becomes scattered showers, sometimes with thunderstorm and the wind is gusty.

Depending on where you are relative of the track of the low pressure, you will see it to bring over you cold air, warm air or both in sequence.

HURRICANE DANIEL HEADED FOR HAWAII, Due TO HIT Friday 28 JULY?

WHY is no weather station reporting this hurricane news????
this web site NOAA in Honolulu http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/cphc/ has been posting advisories since 18 July. it is packing 125mph winds, traveling towards Hawaii now at 12mph, expected to hit the Big Island on Friday…and has such a large diameter it could hit Maui at the same time it totally covers the Big Island.
No, it’s going to fizzle out by the time it gets here.I checked out the website you posted, it’s too far south to hit the islands but we’ll get some waves out of it. Thanks for the warning, I have to request some days off so I can go surfing! Sorry , my mistake, they reported it last week as fizziling out, tonight (Mon.) they said it’s still going but will be downgraded to a tropical storm & the Big Island of Hawaii might get hit, but by the time it gets gere to Oahu where I live, It will just be a little (or a lot) of wind & rain. No problem Maybe up to 30-45 mph winds at the most is nothing here. Most storms either pass us by to the North, or South, but this one they don’t know, so we’ll get some rain this weekend but nothing to worry about it will still be 75 – 80 degrees. If we’re lucky it will leave huge puddles in Kapiolani Park so we can Skimboard the water puddles in the park. We can go about business as usual, us Hawaiians are resillent people, remember a little incident on Dec. 7 called Pearl Harbor? This March we had 40 days & 40 nights of rain. I met Noah Jr. Up in the mountains one day. Now it’s downgraded to a Tropical Depression. (Tues.)

Would you as landlords take a chance on this tenant applicant?

I posted an add for my two bedroom townhouse on CL. I man called me last week saying he was currently living in a property in town in which the owners had been killed in a car accident (true story which was on the news). He stated the property was in probate because the owners were deceased and he had no idea if he was going to get put out due to foreclosure. He mentioned that he was a minister going through a divorce and his credit was a bit shakey but he needed to move asap. He also told me he was working with the New Orleans redevelopment plan and traveled back and forth from my state to Louisiana weekly to work for about four days. In small talk, he mentioned his 30 year-old daughter recently went blind and then he began to compliment me on how smart I sounded since I understood what his group was attempting to do in the rebuilding of New Orleans. Then he says he could send me documentation of all the projects and proposals they were working on as proof of business, plus he wanted my opinion on the matter since I have knowledge of such things. He sent me 12 emails of this stuff. Then he says he was willing to pay two months rent to get started, though I was only asking for the first month’s rent and a $650 deposit. Upon googling his name I discovered that he had had ties to Dr. Henry Lyons in the late 90s. He THEN asked me what I did for a living because I sounded pretty intelligent and he was not having much luck dealing with certain people who understood his business. He said he would be flying back into town in a couple of days and would like to meet to check out the property. However, he calls me the next morning at 930am leaving a message asking me to email him an application. I ignored his call and the three other ones that followed. I was able to use my public database to check out his business credentials and he does have a legitimate business in downtown New Orleans. However, I also saw where he was arrested in 1997 for trying to buy $20 worth of cocaine from an undercover cop.

Knowing all of this, would you have taken a chance and rented to this guy or ignored him like I did?

The Expert answers:

I would have ignored him too, due to the 3 main warning flags:

1. A story that sounds made up and designed to tug at the heartstrings (current landlords killed in a crash, & imminent foreclosure, & he’s a priest, & his daughter is going blind, & he is doing amazing charity work, etc.).

2. The fact that he’s willing to pay you more than you are asking.

3. The fact that he’s been in trouble with drugs.

“When one door closes, another one opens”

August 29, 2005 my whole life began to change. I found myself trembling in fear as tears run down my face. My family was right beside me, praying and waiting for a relief, as a monstrous stormed named Hurricane Katrina began to take its place. As all of this was happening, we thought the world was coming to an end. Luckily, there was a moral that I learned from this catastrophe, which changed my whole life and future.
Saturday morning, we were jumping with joy, not knowing we were jumping for doom as our parents were finally leaving us. They were about to travel very far to Maryland. It was not very often that our parents would travel. This meant that we should make good use of our time. No one was there to restrict us from doing anything we desired. We could watch movies and talk on the phone as much as we wanted. We did not have to hear these four despised words for once, “Go read your books.”
Everything went really smoothly. The only thing which made the day horrible was my five younger little brats. They were causing so much chaos. The whole house was a mess. Fortunately, I had my siblings cooperate with me to get the house clean.
Sunday afternoon, I was really looking forward to going outside. As I stepped outside the house, I noticed the gray clouds covering the bright, shining sun. Unfortunately, I made my way back into the house. I decided to watch a few On Demand movies for the remainder of the time.
As I was watching my movie, the phone happened to ring. It was my Aunty Kenny,

sounding really concerned. She asked, “Where is your mom and dad?” I told her that they were in Maryland, and that they wouldn’t be back until Monday. So, she ended the conversation by saying, “Thank you.”
Thirty minutes later, my mother called the house. She wanted to know everything that we had done, since she had left. Surprisingly, I happened to tell her the truth. All of sudden she began to yell at me through the phone. She yelled, “Do you not know that a hurricane is heading toward our city!” I became speechless and scrolled down to channel three.
I did not really worry much about the hurricane. Almost all the hurricanes, which came to New Orleans, was not really much of a big deal. Unfortunately, I began to have doubts about this one.
This hurricane, which was ready to make the landfall the next day, began to concern me. When I began to wonder about the other hurricanes, which had hit Florida a few weeks ago, I thought about the large amount of damage that occurred right after the storm. Therefore, I was hoping that the type of damage, which had happened in Florida, would not happen in Louisiana. My main concern happened to be whether or not if my parents would come home in time to save us from this incoming storm.
As I was watching the news, they mentioned that the flights going to and from New Orleans, were soon to be cancelled. All of sudden, fear overcame my body. I was praying that my parents would catch the last flight back home. I regretted rejoicing to the fact that my parents had left. I really wanted them to come back home.
My little brother was three years old at the time. He asked, “Is mommy and daddy coming back home?” I responded by shrugging my shoulders. As a result, he looked at me weirdly and

left the room. I turned my head back to the television and saw the Red Lobs

The Expert answers:

Okay, so I’ll give you some grammar edit first:

After the date, August 29, 2005, a comma should come after 2005.

“a monstrous stormed” should be “a monstrous storm”

“The only thing which made the day horrible was my five younger little brats.” should be “The only thing which made the day horrible were my five younger little brats.”

“Sunday afternoon, I was” should be “On Sunday afternoon, I was”

“the gray clouds” should be “the grey clouds”

“few On Demand movie” should be “a few movies on demand”

“the phone happened to ring” would be better written as “the phone just so happened to ring”

“Aunty Kenny” is “Auntie Kenny”

““Where is your mom and dad?” should be “Where are your mom and dad?”

“New Orleans, was not really” should be “New Orleans, were not really”

“Is mommy and daddy coming back home?” should be “Are mommy and daddy coming back home?”

Okay, critique:

It’s a good plot but it’s just missing some flow. When you move from Saturday to Sunday, it just feels too fast. Also, I noticed that you used the word “unfortunately” to start your sentence a few times. I think that you’re pretty young so eventually, you’ll be able to become a great writer. I’d be interested in knowing what happens next. Also, I’m missing a connection. You should tell me more about the protagonist. I need to know more about what she’s like so I can relate to her. I as the reader need to be able to imagine myself being her.

Good luck with this story!

The following morning, there was an announcement stating, “All Orleans Parish Schools Will Be Closed.” I was extremely happy that school would be closed. I had more time to sleep and finish my homework.
As the day proceeded, we continued to watch the news. My mother was monitoring the news to check if any mandatory evacuations would be in effect. The only way we would evacuate, was if the government announced a mandatory evacuation.
Since I was born up to August 2005, we have never evacuated. My sister and I, had our fingers crossed, hoping the evacuation would be mandatory. A few minutes later, we saw the headline stating, “Mandatory Evacuation.” I was strangely excited to read that headline. Finally, for the first time ever, we were going to evacuate.

It is a good story. I believe you would get an A+ because you did a great job and is this story for like a school project? The best thing to do was obviously what you did you prayed. You obviously must have been very thankful. I think there should be more work that is done faster in New Orleans. I’m glad to see that you somewhat stayed calm during this besides your stomach growling. Gj!

What are your week 3 predictions?

Here are mine, 10 points for who ever gets the most. Tie breaker is monday night score.
Jacksonville @ Houston – Texans looked pretty good last week, after a bad week 1. I don’t think the Jags are moving in the right direction, I think Del Rio needs to go. I like the texans.

Washington @ Detroit – The way washington played st louis last week it wouldn’t surprise me if detriot gets its first win, but I think the skins defense will be able to keep that from happening.

NY Giants @ Tampa Bay – The Giants are too much for Tampa, even at home.

Green Bay @ St. Louis – The packers aren’t very good, but the rams are terrible. Packers win.

Cleveland @ Baltimore – Brady Quinn should really have no trouble finding Ed Reed for at least 2 TDs. The ravens should win by at least 4 TD’s.

Kansas City @ Philadelphia – I think Cassels return is good news for the Chiefs but they still don’t match up welll against the eagles. I think the eagles win this one pretty easily.

Atlanta @ New England – As a pats fan I might be a little biased, but I think some of the timing issues can be worked out this week and going up against a defense that’s good but certainly not as good as what the Pats have dealt with and welker should be back giving the patriots formations with Both edelmen and welker at the same time for the first time this season. Brady should do pretty well. The Pats defense has looked presentable. They wont shut down the Falcon’s offense but they can keep it somewhat reasonable. Patriots have only lost back to back games 2 times with brady starting, and at home I think they can eak this one out.

Tennessee @ NJ Jets – The Jets defense is good against the pass, but didn’t look good against the run. Pats ran 20 times for 83 yards, I expect the titans to run a lot against the jets and their defense should create some turnovers. I like the titans, even though they are on the road they don’t want to go 0-3 in their division.

San Francisco @ Minnesota – With Minnesota at home, I think they win. If this was a road game I would lean towards San Fran, but at home I think the Vikes hold out.

New Orleans @ Buffalo – Buffalo just doesn’t have the fire power to match New Orleans.

Chicago @ Seattle – Chicago was able to upend the steelers, I think they can do the same against the seahawks.

Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati – It wouldn’t shock me if the Bengals pulled the upset at home. Pitt can’t run, and they dont have troy back. But the steelers I think can squeek out a win here.

Miami @ San Diego – The phins travelling across the country after monday night makes me lean towards San Diego. Neither team is very good, but a short week might be the difference.

Denver @ Oakland – Boy this is tough, which team is worse the Broncos or the Raiders, they both know they have a shot at their division since no team there is good. I think the broncos defense has looked half way decent, and Orton hasn’t made too many mistakes. I think the broncos win – hard one to call.

Indianapolis @ Arizona – Tough game and a short week with more travel for the Colts. I don’t think the colts defense is too good, and I think the Cards can outscore them.

Carolina @ Dallas – Dallas is good, and their looking for a win at home after last week. The Panthers are hungry for a win, but Dallas is too.
Dallas 31 Carolina 20
TSQUARE the broncos have played the bengals @ cincy and the browns.
The raiders have played the chargers @ home and @ KC. Bengals are better than the Chargers and the Chiefs are better than the browns, so its a wash.

here yo ugo eddies y man?

The Music
During the World War 2 era music became extremely important to many people. Here, it gave people the feeling of relaxation and aided them in their attempt to get the mind out of their heads. It also played a large roll over seas with the solders fighting in the wars. Music was one of the few things the soldiers had that helped them remember what it was like back home. It also helped them relaxing during times of great stress, which is a very big deal because I’m sure it kept many people sane during the fighting. There were many types of music back then, but during this period of time jazz sky rocketed. Jazz, which many once disliked became the most popular music here in the U.S. with the rise of jazz many new genres emerged from it. These new genres include, Swing, Dixieland Jazz, Bebop, Cool Jazz, and Hard Bop. Swing, which was the most popular out of them all, was used to dance and party to. Dixieland Jazz had a New Orleans feel to it. Bebop, known as “musician’s music,” was more of an art form, rather than dancing music, that had faster music and was more complex. Cool Jazz was very calm and soothing compared to bebop. Finally, Hard Bop, which was an extension of Bebop, included influences from rhythm, blues, and gospel.
Relationship Between the music of the time and the Characters
Looking back at the main characters in the book, each one can be describing using a music genre. For example, Finny would be jazz, since he is a smooth talker who is rebellious, yet cool and relaxed. He does what he wants when he wants and there are no extends to what he can or cannot do. On the other hand, Gene would be classical music. Gene is more down to earth and for the most part does what he is told. He can also be very serious in certain situations, but his mood fluctuates throughout the book. Using music to analyze the characters has greatly helped me understand them and find a deeper meaning to the book.
Songs Mentioned in A Separate Peace
In the novel, A Separate Peace, they mention a few songs, which were poplar during this time. In the novel the boys are found singing the song “A Mighty Fortress us our God”. This was originally a German song, but was translated. This is a very religious song about Gods protection over his follower against evil. This goes along perfectly with the book because it takes place in an school getting ready for the draft. In the book, Finny and his friends jokingly sung the song, almost mocking it because in their mindset, nothing will protect them from being drafted and having their lives put on the line for their country.

Music used as Propaganda
During this era in time, with one of the world’s largest wars going on, all countries involved in the war experienced the same difficulties. They all needed to find ways to persuade their citizens to enlist in the military. They had many ways of doing so, whether it was posters, commercials on the radio and television, or using articles in the newspaper and advertisements on billboards. One of the most influential ways of propaganda used can be found within music. Artists would include positive facts about the war going on, such as heroic moments and stories of victory. This would get people to enlist with the mindset that everything will be okay and all their actions would result in heroic tales as they heard in these songs. When they arrived at the warzone, they were in for a huge surprise. This propaganda tricked many young people into enlisting. An example of this is in the book, A Separate Peace. Leper is persuaded into enlisting because of the video he was shown by the ski crops recruiters. This video showed the ski troops and how they were able to travel all around the world, delivering messages to designated areas. They tricked him into enlisting by depicting the war as a chance to travel around the world and do what he loves to do, which is ski. When Leper arrived at the training camp, he went crazy because it was nothing at all what he imagined from the video. Propaganda was used in many wars and is a very effective way of recruiting, even though it can be very deceitful at times.

Hey!

Money – You should get some Travellers Cheques and take some cash with you, as well as a ATM card, so that you have more than one method of obtaining cash when required.

Documents – Keep all your important documents (i.e. Passport, flight details, hotel bookings, etc) on your person when travelling and ensure that they are in a safe location while they are out of your sight. For example a hotel safety deposit box.

Luggage – Try to travel as light as possible and only take the essentials. It is a real pain when you are frequently travelling around and have a lot of luggage to move with you. Remember, you can get your clothes washed in a laundry when they get dirty for a small price.

Locals – Always be respectful and polite to the local people. Remember you are a foreigner in their country so respect their way of life and culture.

Weather – You will be travelling during the winter period, so be sure to bring warm clothing, including hats, scarfs, gloves, etc. Forget about bringing your shorts and flip flops, because it will be way to cold to wear them out here!

I have been to all those countries you have mentioned, apart from Austria and overall have had good experiences in all those places. Remember to use lots of common sense and think twice with everything, especially if you are travelling alone.

Take care and have fun exploring Europe.

Lyustiger,Last Minute Family Travel?

The Expert answers:

Depends on how you are planning to travel. For example, if you’re traveling by land or sea then you will need either an Enhanced Driver’s License or a US Passport card. You need a valid US passport and / or NEXUS Card if you are traveling by air between Canada and U.S.

To become a Canadian citizen, you must have permanent resident status in Canada, and that status must not be in doubt. This means you must not be the subject of an immigration investigation, an immigration inquiry or a removal order (an order from Canadian officials to leave Canada). You must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) in the past four years before applying. Children do not need to meet this requirement.

I have a 1 hour layover in paris is that enough time?

I am traveling from Newark to Munich. However there is a 1 hour layover in Paris. Is this enough time to get on my connecting flight to Munich? I have never been to this airport before and only speak English and will be traveling alone. Should I reconsider this flight package?
Okay so i found out that i’m using delta air for both flights, and i will not have to worry about transferring my luggage.

The Expert answers:

Delta Airlines arranges these flights with the idea that you will have enough time to transfer. You will not have any time to shop or have a meal in the airport, however. Try to get some sleep on the plane (skip the movie) ; o/w you will be dead tired when the plane lands in Paris. Try to learn some German for Munich. THough many Germans know some English, many speak only German. Speaking English in any of the western European airports is no problem. If you do not speak the local language, the airport employees usually then ask you if you speak English. Americans who speak French will often ask the questions in French and the employees will reply in English. Just speak slowly, don’t use contractions (like the word don’t) and don’t use slang terms (might not be understood).

Taking my 16-year-old to Paris for the weekend…?

We are going in June 2007. We’ve both wanted to go and are just making a weekend of it to say we’ve been there. We don’t have tons of money so what can anyone recommend for a REALLY quick weekend getaway? Hotels? A little bistro that has great pastries and coffee. We aren’t getting a car so I need things we can walk to.

Although I’d love to see the Louvre I know we won’t have the time. Any other suggestions?

Also, any travel agencies that put together cheap packages?

The Expert answers:

You should see if a local or nearby university is taking a group to Paris during Spring Break…that’s how I got hooked on Paris. Here, it’s around $1400/person for 10 days (airfare, hotel, museum pass, metro pass). What’s great is that anyone can go, not just university students.

When are you leaving for Paris and returning home? There is so much to see and experience Paris. Are you arriving on Saturday?

I would suggest taking an introductory bus tour of Paris with Cityrama or Paris Vision. They offer historical commentary via headphones and it’s a great way to see the city. There is also a tour that includes the bus tour and a boat ride along the Seine. If you’re short on time, I’d recommend that. You can see a lot of the main sites.

You can get a museum pass (the 2-day museum pass) and you could go see the Louvre without standing in line. Enter through the Metro (Palais Royale: Musee du Louvre) or the Louvre shopping center (Carrousel du Louvre, I think) and you won’t have to stand in line at the Pyramid. You can also visit nearby Musee d’Orsay with your museum pass. The Rodin Museum and nearby Invalides and Napoleon’s Tomb are nice, not crowded. The Museum pass will gain you entrance to all of those sites.

The Eiffel Tower is free (best site for photos: Trocadero) unless you go up, as stated previously. But get there early or you’ll be standing in line for a while. Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe are great. The museum pass allows you free access of the Arc. Notre Dame is free and so beautiful.

There are some really nice restaurants in the Notre Dame area. I believe we ate at Cafe Esmerelda and the Quasimodo Cafe were relatively inexpensive. And the Louvre food court is affordable and offers many options.

You can get a carnet of metro tickets (un carnet du dix) for each of you. It’s cheaper than purchasing them separately and will cost about 11 Euros/each. The Metro is fast and easy.

As for hotels, I’ve only stayed at the Republique Hotel. It’s not too far from Pere Lachaise Cemetery (Jim Morrison, Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein and countless others are buried here) and has some really nice restaurants in the area (The Maya is my favorite). It’s a nice hotel, the staff (most) speak English. Great breakfast.

I suggest getting a Rick Steves’ Paris book…he gives you a quick tour of the Louvre so you can see the main sites. Or check out his web site and download the tour to your iPod.

When you eat out, check the prices of the beverages. Pop can cost you a pretty penny. If you want water, order “un carafe d’eau” and you’ll get a nice cold pitcher of free tap water. If you just order water, you’ll get a 3 or 4 Euro bottle. Restaurants post their menu outside so you can peruse the menu before entering.

Best souvenirs are found on Rue de Rivoli, across from the Louvre. I’ve found mini Eiffel Towers for 1 Euro and 15 postcards for 1 Euro. But you have to do some searching…don’t buy at the first shop. The souvenir shops near Notre-Dame are nice, too.

Travelling to Paris. Need help with booking, hotels, the lot!?

Hello, I’m going to Paris this July with my family and I’ve been given the job of booking everything (yay!)
Firstly, I’ll need to book a way of getting there and back, and I was thinking of doing so with Eurostar. Now shall I book the accommodation with Eurostar as well (as they have a ‘latest deal’ package page) or shall I do so separately? Also what can one do in Paris in 3 days? My mum would like to visit the Louis Vuitton store so I guess that’s one thing on the list. Google search tells me that the one situated in ‘Champ – Elysees’ is the largest one in Paris?

Any help would be great – Thank you!
I forgot to add, I’m going from the UK
